Shares in CalAmp Corp. lost more than 6 percent Wednesday after the company reported another loss, largely the result of a $16 million charge taken for a faulty product.

The Oxnard-based telecom company reported a loss of $11 million (-48 cents per share), an improvement on a $34 million loss (-$1.47) from the same period a year earlier. The company took the $16 million charge because of a faulty product circuit board sold to a direct broadcast satellite customer.

Sales at CalAmp inched up 2 percent to $47 million, boosted mainly by sales at the company’s wireless datacom unit, which nearly doubled sales to $23 million. The company said its acquisitions of SmartLink Radio Networks and AirIQ’s vehicle tracking unit also helped earnings.

Shares in CalAmp dropped 24 cents to $3.69 in afternoon trading Wednesday on the Nasdaq.
