Walt Disney Co. said Thursday that it will close its New York production of “Beauty and the Beast,” on July 29.

The production, which has been running for 13 years, making it the sixth-longest-running show on Broadway ever, will be shuttered to prepare for the Dec. 6 opening of “The Little Mermaid,” the New York Times reported.

Disney is also running productions of “The Lion King,” “Mary Poppins” and “Tarzan,” the Times added.

The Burbank-based entertainment company said the lack of theaters, a limited market for fairytale-themed shows and waning ticket sales led to the decision to close the show.

“Beauty and the Beast” has grossed $1.4 billion during its run, the Times said.

Separately, Disney also said its Disney Magic cruise ship will return to the West Coast in 2008 to offer seven-night Mexican Riviera cruises. The ship will depart from the Port of Los Angeles beginning May 25 and is scheduled for 12 consecutive cruises. Tom McAlpin, Disney Cruise Line’s president, said popular demand is brining the cruises back.

Shares in Disney were up 55 cents to $35.80 in midday trading Thursday.
