Governor to Boost Building, Cut Welfare

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Wednesday proposed a a $143.4 billion state budget with increases in spending on prisons and infrastructure but cuts in welfare for children, the Sacramento Bee reports.


The governor’s plan for the fiscal year that begins July 1 would increase government spending on most general programs by just one percent. Schwarzenegger would accomplish that by expanding some programs while cutting others.


The state will have enough money on hand to cover its costs in the 2007-08 fiscal year, the governor said.
