Shares in Trio Tech International soared nearly 20 percent as the company on Friday announced strong earnings spurred by growing sales and cost-cutting measures.

Trio-Tech reported second quarter net income of $799,000 (25 cents per share), a big jump from a loss of $446,000 (-15 cents) for the same period a year earlier.

Revenues for the Van Nuys computer testing company surged 89 percent to $14 million thanks in large part to increased sales of the company’s test equipment, which is used for computer chips. The company also said the growing business in China as well as the shuttering of a facility in Ireland also helped spur profit.

“We are encouraged by our strong backlog, and are optimistic about the second half of the fiscal year,” said Chief Executive S.W. Yong.

Shares in Trio Tech soared 19.2 percent ($2.19) to $13.55 in midday trading Friday.
