China Eases Travel to U.S.

Southern California is expected to reap a bulk of the economic benefits of an agreement reached Tuesday allowing Chinese tourists to visit the United States on leisure travel visas beginning next spring, the Daily Breeze reports.

About 110,000 Chinese tourists traveled to Los Angeles last year, but that number could increase by 50 to 75 percent after the agreement goes into effect, according to Patty MacJennet, senior vice president of marketing for L.A. Inc., the city’s convention and visitor’s bureau.

Part of the appeal comes from the fact that Los Angeles serves as the country’s main gateway to the Pacific Rim and is home to the second-largest Chinese-American community in the United States after New York City, according to MacJennet.

“A country with 1.3 billion people and a growing economy makes for an enormous travel potential coming out of China,” MacJennet said. “Thanks to the entertainment industry, L.A. has a very recognizable brand that China is familiar and comfortable with.”
