Capstone Surges on Announcement

Shares of Capstone Turbine Corp. got a boost Wednesday after the mayor of New York City said the city is going to pursue installation of technology in its buildings similar to what Capstone develops.


The Chatsworth company, which had been seeking permission for the installations for months, announced late Tuesday that Mayor Michael Bloomberg had concluded the turbines would increase power efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.


The new rule takes effect immediately and is part of the PlaNYC initiative, designed to help spur development of more energy efficient projects. Capstone small turbines use the energy created by descending to generate electricity.


“Capstone has been cooperating with the Cogeneration Task Force for more than a year to get this new standard written and on the books,” Jim Crouse, a spokeman for Capstone said in a ststement.


Shares in Capstone gained 7 percent Wednesday to $1.23 in afternoon trading Wednesday on the Nasdaq.
