$17 Million Port Tank Farm Deal OK’d

A deal to move a hazardous tank farm off San Pedro’s waterfront cleared the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday, all but assuring its final approval, the Daily Breeze reports.

The $17 million settlement with Westway Terminal Corp. gives the company 18 months to begin tearing down the tanks to relocate, freeing up valuable space for the community’s waterfront promenade.

The agreement will become final upon Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s signature.

“Westway is a dangerous business, which houses flammable liquids,” Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn said. “It should not be located so close to our San Pedro neighborhoods, even more so since 9-11.”

The Westway lease for approximately 14 acres of land from Berths 69 to 71 – south of Ports O’ Call Village – was not set to run out until 2025.
