Mattel Recalls Nearly 9 Million Toys

Mattel Inc. issued recalls Tuesday for nearly 9 million more Chinese-made toys that contain dangerously small magnets and lead paint.

This huge recall comes only a couple weeks after the toymaker announced a similar recall of 1.5 million toys that were possibly contaminated with lead paint.

The recall also comes as the owner of a Chinese toy factory that became the focus of the first recall reportedly committed suicide just days after Mattel identified his company as the manufacturer. The latest toys were not made at the same factory, Mattel said.

The most recent recall covers 7.3 million Polly Pocket play sets, including 2.4 million that were recalled late last year, along with another 1 million Doggie Day Care play sets, 700,000 Barbie and Tanner play sets and 345,000 Batman and One Piece magnetic action figure sets. All of the sets contain small magnets that may pose a choking hazard for small children, Mattel said.

Mattel is also recalling 430,000 “Sarge” die cast toy cars because the paint on the toys may contain hazardous levels of lead paint.

The El Segundo-based toymaker’s Web site disclosed the recalls of the toys that contain the small magnets while the recall of the lead-painted cars was announced at a news conference by the Consumer Product Safety Commission Tuesday morning.

At least two lawsuits have been filed in Mattel’s first recall, one of the suits is seeking class-action status.

Mattel said last week that the first recall will cost the company about $30 million. No figures were available on the recall announced today.

The CPSC said that no injuries have been reported from either recall.

Shares in Mattel were down 79 cents, or 3.4 percent, to $22.78 in trading early Tuesday afternoon.
