Where Every Day Is Free Lunch Day

Those who claim that there is no such thing as a free lunch haven’t had a bite to eat at Laserfiche.

Every work day the Long Beach document management company treats its 160 employees to a smorgasbord of free food in a perk that harkens back to the tech boom of the late 1990s.

And this isn’t just boring cafeteria fare. The daily meals are catered, with different dishes depending on the day of the week. Offerings range from make-your-own sandwiches, to pizza and even barbecue on warm summer days.

“It’s a wonderful thing since I don’t make myself breakfast,” said engineer James Green last week, after creating a salad with ham, chicken and ranch dressing just the way he likes it. “It’s definitely a nice perk.”

Laserfiche workers and executive recruiters didn’t know of any other company in Los Angeles that offers daily free meals. Hotels and restaurants often offer free food for employees, though.

The free meals take a $150,000 bite out of the company’s bottom line, but executives say it’s a perk they aren’t about to end given the obvious benefits to employee morale, camaraderie and recruiting. Also, the company’s been doing it for 15 years.

“We do a lot of recruiting at the college level; it’s the first thing I mention, and their eyes just light up,” said Laura Victoria, the recruitment manager. “I mention it even before our healthcare package or 401(k).”

Each morning the workers are informed of the day’s menu and make their orders. Usually, the lunch is served for about 110 employees. And food isn’t the only perk at lunchtime. Laserfiche also has a game room where employees can play foosball, pool, and ping pong during their break.

“I was at another company for 26 years before I came here and we would get lunch just once a month,” said Human Resources Director Hank Eisner. “We never had anything like this.
