Mattel Inc. said it would introduce a Barbie digital-music player and Web site to try to boost sales of the iconic fashion doll.

A beta version of the site, called BarbieGirls.com, is accessible now and will allow users to create a virtual character, shop with imaginary money as well as chat with other on-line members.

Barbie Girls, a digital-music player in several colors with attachable clothing and accessories, will sell for $59.99 starting this summer, the El Segundo-based toymaker said.

Mattel said it hopes attract children increasingly drawn to electronic gadgets and give a boost to sales of the famed 48-year old brand. Total sales of Barbie climbed 2 percent in the first quarter, helped by a 20 percent leap in international sales. That was countered by a 20 percent dip in domestic sales for the first quarter, Mattel said

Shares of Mattel were down 4 cents to $28.63 Friday in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
