A Green Port May Cost Drivers

A new study on the economic well-being of port truckers seems to re-affirm what most everybody already knows: Hauling containers to and from the waterfront isn’t very lucrative, the Long Beach Press-Telegram reports.

Oral and written surveys from February and March examined driver incomes, hours worked, expenses, miles driven, model of truck used and level of benefits, among other things.

The study found that, on average, driver pay after expenses equals about $12.13 per hour, annual fuel costs exceed $25,000 and drivers work in excess of 50 hours weekly.

The study comes as commissioners consider regulatory overhauls to port drayage in an effort to cut toxic pollution from more than 14,000 primarily older diesel rigs serving the seaports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.
