Gov. Leads Boeing in Celebration

As Congress neared approval of a massive Pentagon budget that includes triple the number of C-17s than originally thought, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday led Boeing Co. workers in a rally to celebrate, the Long Beach Press-Telegram reports.

With Mayor Bob Foster and Boeing executives at his side, Schwarzenegger took about an hour off from an appearance at a women’s conference across town to visit the C-17 factory for the late morning event that attracted several thousand.

Five weeks ago many of the Boeing workers were glum after being told the company would be closing the plant in 2008 because the government was not ordering more planes.

A $448 billion Pentagon budget to be voted on by the full Congress this week has funding that would nearly triple President Bush’s original request for only eight C-17 cargo planes.
