The state of California has filed suit against General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and four other automakers for making vehicles that contribute to global warming, Bloomberg News reports.

The suit, filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court in Oakland, claims that the automakers have cost the state millions of dollars and are creating a “public nuisance” by producing millions of vehicles that emit carbon dioxide, contributing to global warming. Also named in the action were DaimlerChrysler AG, Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co.
