Verizon Communications Inc. and DirecTV Group Inc. said Thursday they have entered into a new agreement to provide Internet access, telephone services and satellite TV content and service in a bundled package in select locations.

Verizon will offer its telephone and broadband Internet services while DirecTV will offer its satellite TV services. This agreement will mainly affect customers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic and will serve as a direct competitor to the current cable company offering called the “triple play,” which is cable TV, phone and Internet all offered by the same provider on the same line.

Verizon said it has partnered with New Jersey-based MDU Communications to provide, install, operate and maintain the services, which will be focused on multidwelling-units such as apartment and condominium complexes.

Shares in El Segundo-based DirecTV were down 34 cents to $19.49 in early trading Thursday.
