Union Asks for Strike Blessing

The head of the Engineers and Architects Association union that struck Aug. 22-23 is asking the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor for its blessing in authorizing a second strike.

Robert Aquino, the executive director of the union, told a Labor Day gathering that he intended to seek the backing of the federation. During the strike, Aquino, who did not seek the federation’s sanction before the job action two weeks ago, said he did not seek an endorsement because Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, a former union organizer, controlled the federation, a remark Aquino later apologized for.

The union represents 7,500 city employees and has been without a contract for more than two years. The EAA has been holding out for raises comparable to what were granted to Department of Water and Power employees under the former administration.
