DirecTV, News Corp. Talks

Liberty Media Corp. said Thursday that it is open to a swap for its stake in News Corp. for the New York media company’s controlling interest in DirecTV Group Inc.

Liberty Media’s chairman John Malone has been in discussions with Rupert Murdoch over some sort of swap since Malone acquired a nearly 20 percent stake in News Corp. two years ago.

Media reports of the talks first surfaced last month and signaled to many that Murdoch’s willingness to talk, combined with his move to buy MySpace.com, was a sign that he no longer saw the U.S. satellite TV company as a profitable venture.
