L.A. Times Editor Steps Down

Los Angeles Times editor Dean Baquet will leave the paper under pressure from the newspaper’s owner and disputes over cost-cutting measures.

Baquet’s departure comes only weeks after the Tribune Co. ousted publisher Jeff Johnson and replaced him with Chicago Tribune publisher David Hiller for publicly resisting staff cuts.

Baquet will be replaced Monday by James O’Shea, the managing editor of the Chicago Tribune.

Baquet, 50, was forced to resign by Hiller after refusing to cut newsroom jobs, according to the L.A. Times. The announcement was to have been made Thursday but was rushed after the news leaked late Tuesday.

The departure comes at a time when the Tribune’s board is exploring the possible sale of the company as a whole or in a piecemeal fashion. Last week, the paper reported receiving lackluster bids from several private equity firms for the entire company. Eli Broad, David Geffen and others have expressed an interest in buying the Times, the company’s most valuable asset.

The departure of Baquet might spark an exodus of other paper personnel, reports said.
