Lawndale 405 Sign Could Be Done

Say goodbye to Homer Simpson, Geraldo Rivera and all the other Fox television personalities who have watched over the South Bay from atop an 11-story electronic billboard in Lawndale for more than two years now, the Daily Breeze reports.

Come Dec. 1, the company that owns and operates the sign overlooking the San Diego (405) Freeway can no longer feature advertising for Fox Broadcasting Co., according to a settlement with the California Department of Transportation released Thursday.

Further, if content violating the state’s outdoor advertising regulations pops up on the billboard between next month and June 2010, an additional fine of $17,600 will be added to other penalties, the settlement stated.

State law requires outdoor advertisements in redevelopment zones, like Electra-Media’s 115-foot-tall sign near Inglewood Avenue and the freeway, to feature businesses physically located in that same specified area.

Fox has no offices in Lawndale despite efforts by the billboard owner and its attorney to show otherwise. Also, Caltrans didn’t buy the argument that the ad content is legal because Lawndale residents receive Fox programs on their televisions.
