China to Chart Own Yuan Course

He has visited China 70 times since 1990 and is well-connected in Beijing, but U.S. Treasury Secretary-designate Hank Paulson faces a daunting challenge to get Beijing to veer from its ultra-cautious stance on the yuan.


Most economic fundamentals might point to the need for a stronger yuan, but China-watchers say concerns about the impact on jobs and growth will make the ruling Communist Party wary of sanctioning a much faster rate of climb for the currency.
