Stocks Drop on Interest Rate Worries

Interest rate anxiety sent stocks falling on Thursday despite strong economic news. A jump in oil prices heightened worries about inflation.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 47.14, or 0.4 percent, to 11,270.29. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index dropped 3.37, or 0.3 percent, to 1,301.67. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 3.20, or 0.1 percent, to 2,300.15.

Local movers were led by KB Home, which gained 5 percent to $67.82, Ryland Group Inc., which rose 3.6 percent to $70.56, and Arden Group Inc., which climbed 2.3 percent to $86.97. On the down side, Zenith National Insurance Corp. fell 2 percent to $49.43, Northrop Grumman Corp. lost 1 percent to $69.11 and DaVita Inc. slipped 1 percent to $58.64.
