Stocks Dip After Early Gains

Stocks gave up early gains and closed lower Thursday as a higher U.S. trade deficit and questions about the labor market quashed enthusiasm over a policy change at the Bank of Japan.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 33.46, or 0.3 percent, to 10,972.28. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index dropped 6.24, or 0.5 percent, to 1,272.23. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 17.74, or 0.8 percent, to 2,249.72.

Local movers were led by UTi Worldwide Inc., which gained 2.8 percent to $103, Public Storage Inc., which rose 2.5 percent to $82.54, and Diodes Inc., which climbed 4.6 percent to $37.01. On the down side, Saehan Bancorp fell 8.6 percent to $18.75, Ryland Group Inc. lost 2.5 percent to $64.83 and KB Home slipped 1.9 percent to $62.18.
