The the nine-week decline in gasoline prices in Los Angeles and throughout Southern California reversed course over the past week and prices are heading back up, reflecting a sharp jump in crude futures, said the Automobile Club of Southern California.

The average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area rose 4 cents to $2.401 on Friday from $2.361 one week ago. The price was $2.464 per gallon one month ago and $2.289 one year prior, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.

“With crude oil trading at new record-high prices near $60 a barrel, motorists can expect to continue paying more at the pump in coming weeks,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. “The previous nine weeks of declines gave drivers about a 30-cent drop from record high prices we saw in April, before prices started heading up again this past week.”

The Riverside-San Bernardino area had the lowest average price in Southern California for the second Friday in a row, with $2.388. San Diego had the largest increase of the week for the areas surveyed, edging up 4.7 cents to $2.423. Prices in the Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Lompoc area remained the highest at $2.513.

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline as of 12:01 a.m., June 24.
