Stocks Fall on Retail Worries

Anxious investors bid stocks lower Thursday as disappointing retail sales reports prompted fresh concerns about a slowdown in the economy and sliding corporate revenues. A surge in oil prices also spurred selling.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 28.02, or 0.3 percent, to 11,025.51. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index dropped 2.10, or 0.2 percent, to 1,289.14. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 3.53, or 0.2 percent, to 2,311.11.

Local movers were led by 3D Systems Corp., which gained 14.8 percent to $22, Occidental Petroleum Corp., which rose 1.8 percent to $94.28, and Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co., which climbed 1.4 percent to $86.40. On the down side, IRIS International Inc. fell 25.2 percent to $17.27, FirstFed Financial Corp. lost 5.2 percent to $57.72 and Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. slipped 1.4 percent to $85.74.
