7 L.A. Companies Among Largest U.S. Black-Owned Firms

Los Angeles County is home to seven of the largest black-owned companies in the nation, based on an annual list compiled by Black Enterprise magazine.


Torrance-based Act-1 Group was the highest-ranking L.A.-area company on the magazine’s Industrial/Service 100 directory. The staffing company reported revenues of $718 million to finish fourth among the nation’s largest black companies. Act-1 Group also appeared in sixth place on the Business Journal’s list of minority-owned businesses, published in the March 27 issue.


Other local companies on the Industrial/Service list were Compton-based beverage wholesaler Beauchamp Distributing Co., ranked No. 49 with revenues of $83.4 million; equipment lender Americus Credit Corp. of Los Angeles, finishing No. 81 with revenues of $47 million; and Marc Wear, a women’s sport apparel manufacturer in Los Angeles, ranking No. 99 with revenues of $30.9 million.


On a separate directory of auto dealerships, Chino Hills Ford came in at No. 49 with sales of $50.4 million.


The largest black-owned auto dealer in California was Family Auto Group in San Juan Capistrano, with revenues of $223 million.


On the directory of black-owned banks, Broadway Federal Bank in Los Angeles was ranked eighth with assets of $292 million.


The lists of black-owned investment banks, asset managers and private equity firms didn’t mention a single Los Angeles-based company.
