Box office phenomenon “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” added to its legend Monday with news that its historic opening weekend gross was actually $135.6 million, a figure $3 million above original estimates by Walt Disney Studios, the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
The final figures mean “Pirates” blasted by the previous record set by “Spider-Man” four years ago by more than $20 million. Disney officials, secure in the knowledge that they had the biggest three-day opening ever, decided to be conservative in their Sunday estimates because of the World Cup soccer final between Italy and France.
