Kenneth Lay, the disgraced former Enron Corp. chairman who became a target for criticism during the California energy crisis, died early Wednesday, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Lay’s death came less than two months after he and former Enron Chief Executive Jeffrey Skilling were convicted on fraud charges in connection with Enron’s collapse in late 2001. The two had yet to be sentenced. Lay, 64, died at his vacation home in Aspen, Colo.
