Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed former U.S. Treasurer and Huntington Park Mayor Rosario Marin as his new Secretary for State and Consumer Services, replacing Fred Aguiar, who became Schwarzenegger’s cabinet secretary in December as part of a post-special-election shakeup.

Marin, 47, moves over from her post as chair of the state Integrated Waste Management Board, which she has since late 2004. Previously, she served as U.S. Treasurer under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2003, overseeing the U.S. Mint and currency operations. Prior to that, Marin served eight years as Mayor of the San Gabriel Valley city of Huntington Park.

In 2004, Marin campaigned unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Barbara Boxer. Marin lost the primary election to former state Secretary of State Bill Jones, who in turn was trounced by Boxer in the general election.

If confirmed by the state Senate, Marin, a Republican, would receive an annual salary of $131,412.

The State and Consumer Services Agency oversees several departments and boards, including the Department of General Services, the Franchise Tax Board, the Department of Consumer Services, the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and the California Science Center at Exposition Park.
