Farmers to Cut Homeowner Rates

Farmers Insurance is proposing an average 18 percent rate cut for nearly 1 million California homeowners in response to pressure from Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi.

The state’s second-largest homeowners’ insurer becomes the sixth major carrier to announce cuts since the summer, adding more than $171 million in savings to $439 million already proposed this year by some of the nation’s largest insurers.

Garamendi has accused the insurance industry of reaping excessive profits and pressured carriers to lower premiums. This summer he ordered the state’s largest carriers to justify their rates. Farmers’ proposal for $171 million in decreases will likely take effect in June.

Farmers is a unit of Swiss insurance giant Zurich Financial Services.
