Chandlers, Tribune Poised for Showdown

With little outside investor interest in Tribune Co., the Chandler family and the company’s management could be near a fight over all or parts of the media company.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the newspapers founding family, which holds a 20 percent interest in the Chicago company, and Tribune management are lining up financing in order to make competing bids.

The Chandler family is reportedly considering a partnership with Los Angeles billionaire Ron Burkle to bid for all or some of the media company, while Tribune executives, led by Chief Executive Dennis FitzSimons, are expected to partner with three private investment firms.

The Tribune’s team will consist of Rhode Island-based Providence Equity Partners, New York-based Apollo Management and Chicago-based Madison Dearborn, the Times reported.

Shares in Tribune were down 17 cents to $31.58 in trading Monday.
