Tide Turning for Subway to Sea

The name for the proposed project, “subway to the sea,” suggests a quick getaway to sunshine and surf, the Sacramento Bee reports.


But to Letty Tunman, a 35-year-old clerk waiting for her third bus during a recent commute, the proposed subway is little more than a pipe dream.


“It sounds like a good idea, and it would be faster,” she said. “When would it be built?”


No one knows for certain.


The subway to the sea must overcome several obstacles before Tunman can count on it for her weekday trips along west Los Angeles’ jampacked Wilshire Boulevard.


But the proposed extension of the Purple Line subway to Santa Monica beach is gaining traction because of strong support from Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and possible funding from transportation measures Californians approved Nov. 7.
