Disney to Cut 160 Jobs in Burbank

Walt Disney Co. said late Friday that it plans to cut 20 percent of the 800 jobs at its animation studios starting before the end of the year.


Burbank-based Disney said about 160 jobs will be eliminated however, Disney’s Pixar animation division, which is purchased earlier this year and has more than 800 employees at its Emeryville headquarters, won’t see any cuts, Disney said. Disney acquired Pixar in May for about $8 billion.


There are 350 union animation jobs at Disney’s Burbank studio, according to Bloomberg News.


Employees losing their jobs will receive 60 days’ notice, a Disney spokesman said, and the process will begin Dec. 11.


Earlier this summer, Disney announced it would save $100 million a year by cutting 650 jobs at its live-action studio. The cuts represent about 20 percent of the film-studio workforce.


Shares in Disney were up 21 cents to $33.30 in early trading Monday.
