The Port of Los Angeles saw its busiest month on record in July, handling more than 400,000 containers for the first time in its history.

The port saw 404,644 inbound, loaded 20-foot equivalent containers (TEUs) pass through its gates, a 14.8 percent jump compared to last July. Exports also were up, 27 percent to 124,134, for the month.

This marks the first time a Southland port has handled more than 400,000 TEUs in a single month

The Port of Long Beach also saw a healthy 5.4 percent growth in imports with 305,117 TEUs handled. Outbound traffic dipped, however, 5.7 percent to 100,861.

“We just came off of record-breaking months in April, May and June and now the Port of L.A. is seeing record numbers. It’s a very cyclical business but growth has been very consistent when you look at both ports combined.” said Art Wong, a spokesman for the Long Beach Port.

Both the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports have seen nearly double-digit growth in container traffic over each of the past three years.
