HealthSouth to Sell Outpatient Clinics

HealthSouth Corp. announced a restructuring on Monday in which it will sell its outpatient surgery centers, rehabilitation clinics and a diagnostic division to focus on its lucrative inpatient intensive care business.

The Birmingham, Ala.-based hospital operator operates eight Los Angeles County outpatient facilities in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Torrance, Lancaster, Long Beach, and Pasadena, and has operations in Orange and Ventura counties, according to its Web site.

The company has hired Goldman Sachs to assist with the divestments, which are expected to take about a year. HealthSouth is struggling to overcome the continuing impact of a $2.7 billion accounting fraud that came to light in 2003. It also is coping with changes in government reimbursement rules that lower outpatient payments.

Shares of HealthSouth were up on bulletin board trading to 8.8 percent and closed the day at $4.46 a share.
