Stocks End Mixed on Inflation Concerns

Inflation concerns sent stocks mostly lower as crude prices marched toward $68 per barrel and jobless claims fell. Interest in small-cap and technology stocks pushed the Nasdaq narrowly higher, sending the index to its third straight five-year high.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 23.05, or 0.2 percent, to 11,216.50. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index slipped 2.52, or 0.2 percent, to 1,309.04. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 1.42, or 0.1 percent, to 2,361.17, its best close since Feb. 16, 2001.

Local movers were led by Guess Inc., which gained 6.8 percent to $43.14, Stamps.com Inc., which rose 5 percent to $35.82, and Jacobs Engineering Group Inc., which climbed 1.7 percent to $90.43. On the down side, Health Net Inc. fell 2 percent to $48.53, Amgen Inc. lost 1.4 percent to $71.85 and Molina Healthcare Inc. slipped 2.7 percent to $32.80.
