Stocks Rise on Merger Activity

Stocks moved higher Tuesday on increased merger activity despite a lack of other news that kept trading volume light. The Nasdaq reached a new five-year high after a modest gain.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 58.91, or 0.5 percent, to 11,203.85. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index gained 8.12, or 0.6 percent, to 1,305.93. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 8.62, or 0.4 percent, to 2,345.36, its best showing since Feb. 16, 2001.

Local movers were led by Computer Sciences Corp., which gained 4.4 percent to $59.80, Occidental Petroleum Corp., which rose 1.5 percent to $95.61, and True Religion Apparel Inc., which climbed 7.7 percent to $18.65. On the down side, PS Business Parks Inc. fell 2.6 percent to $54.21, Mercury General Corp. lost 1.9 percent to $53.87 and Public Storage Inc. slipped 1.1 percent to $78.05.
