L.A. Gas Prices Drop for Fifth Week

L.A. gasoline prices fell for the fifth straight week as ample supply and low seasonal demand combined to relieve motorists who endured record high prices just two months ago, said the Automobile Club of Southern California.

The average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area fell 8.9 cents to $2.669 on Friday from $2.758 one week ago. The price was $2.971 per gallon one month ago and $2.372 one year prior. Prices haven’t hit a new record high since Sept. 6.

“Motorists have experienced significant relief during the past month with pump prices falling about 30 cents per gallon,” Auto Club spokeswoman Carol Thorp said. “As long as supplies remain strong, motorists can expect this lower price trend to continue for at least the next couple of weeks.”

The Orange County area had the lowest average price in Southern California, slipping 8.1 cents to $2.614. The Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Lompoc area had the highest gas price, dropping 10.2 cents to $2.765.

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline as of 12:01 a.m. each Friday.
