Los Angeles-area gas prices kept slipping from the record levels of almost two months ago, falling nearly 3 cents a gallon last week, according to the federal Energy Information Administration. They are now just 5 cents per gallon higher than they were a year ago.

The average gallon of self-serve regular in the Los Angeles area was $2.414 for the week ended May 30, down from $2.439 the previous week. L.A. gas prices are about 18 cents lower than they were on April 14, when gas prices finally started declining. The drop has been gradual since then.

Statewide gas prices dipped nearly 4 cents per gallon in the past week averaging $2.391 per gallon for the week ended May 30, but they are still nearly 6 cents higher than one year ago.

California was still the most expensive state in which to buy a gallon of gas, and San Francisco held onto the title of being the most expensive city, out-pricing Los Angeles for the ninth straight week, with an average of $2.433 per gallon.

The lowest-priced state of the areas surveyed was Minnesota and the city with cheapest gas was Houston, at $1.931 and $1.964, respectively.
