Stocks eked out modest gains in light trading Friday ahead of the long holiday weekend as investors eyed higher oil prices and a government report that showed rising personal incomes but declines in consumer spending.
In afternoon trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 7.32, or 0.1 percent, to 10,544.92. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index was up 1.05, or 0.1 percent, at 1,198.67. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 3.81, or 0.2 percent, to 2,075.05.
