Promotion Shakes Up Clear Channel Management

The executive in charge of Clear Channel Communications Inc.’s eight Los Angeles radio stations has been promoted to a national position within the nation’s largest radio broadcaster, Clear Channel said Tuesday.

Charlie Rahilly, the Clear Channel senior vice president in charge of Southern California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii, will become executive vice president of operations for San Antonio-based Clear Channel, the company said.

Rahilly will continue to have broad oversight responsibilities of Clear Channel stations west of the Mississippi River and will remain in Burbank, he said. But his promotion further shakes up Clear Channel’s Southern California leadership; last month, the broadcaster fired Roy Laughlin from his job as co-vice president of the eight Los Angeles stations.

Greg Ashlock, the other co-vice president in Los Angeles, is “firmly in charge” of the local cluster, Rahilly said. There are no plans to fill Laughlin’s job or Rahilly’s old position, Clear Channel said.

The local shake-up comes as Clear Channel continues to inch upwards in ratings in Los Angeles. Two of the top five stations in Arbitron Inc. ratings are owned by Clear Channel: KFI-AM (640) and KIIS-FM (102.7), both of which gained in ratings in the winter 2005 quarter.

Rahilly said his promotion won’t bring any major changes in Los Angeles. “Radio is a very local business,” he said. “(The stations) have done a great job building audiences.”
