The Angels and the city of Anaheim are awaiting a key appeals court decision due Monday on owner Arte Moreno’s name change of the baseball team.

A decision could come as early as Friday. An Anaheim spokesman said there’s a chance it could come after Monday.

In March, the city appealed to the 4th District Appellate Court in Santa Ana to reverse an earlier decision that allowed Moreno to keep the Los Angeles of Angels of Anaheim name.

The appeal is an attempt to overturn the Orange County Superior Court’s rulings against the city, when Anaheim twice tried to get injunctions barring the name change.

Anaheim’s fight against the Angels is playing out on two fronts: the injunction denial appeal and a separate lawsuit filed by the city against the team.

In the suit, the city charges the name change violates the team’s 1996 lease at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, which was struck with prior owner Walt Disney Co. The Angels and Anaheim are set to go to trial over the lawsuit in November, barring a settlement.

The decision on the injunction appeal is due 90 days after the city launched its appeal, though delays aren’t uncommon. It’s not unusual for an appellate court to take the full three months to make a decision.

If the city loses its appeal, the Angels are set to play the season under the “Los Angeles” name.

In March, the appeals court urged the city and the team to work out the issue outside court. The two reportedly talked about a settlement, which proved unsuccessful.
