John McKay has been involved in sports as a player, manager, and attorney, and he brings that expertise to his new post at Jeffer Mangels Butler & Marmaro LLP, where he’ll be building the law firm’s sports practice.

He also brings the influence of his late father, the famous USC football coach who led the Trojans to four national championships.

The McKay household revolved around sports. “It was the conversation at every dinner table,” McKay said. “That’s who my family is. I think it’s entirely responsible for shaping my career.”

At Jeffer Mangels, McKay will work on expanding the practice to include football. As executive director of football operations with the New Coliseum Partners in 1998, he was responsible for negotiating the renovation of the L.A. Memorial Coliseum and for trying to acquire an expansion NFL franchise.

McKay spent the past two years working for his alma mater USC, acquiring land near the campus to build a new biomedical research park.

He also recently held the title of vice president and general manager of the Los Angeles Xtreme in the XFL. As the top executive of the franchise, he was responsible for hiring staff and coaches, drafting the players, and selling sponsorships and season tickets.

McKay lives with his wife Kim in Pacific Palisades. They have a 5-year-old daughter named Kiley. He also has a son from a previous marriage. And he enjoys sports. “I play a fair amount of golf, and I’m fairly average,” he said.
