Declining crude futures helped gas prices in the Los Angeles area fall for the first time in five weeks, following their recent shoot up after a two-month cooling-off period, according to data from the federal Energy Information Administration.

The average gallon of self-serve regular in the Los Angeles area was $2.546 for the week ended July 25, down from $2.558 the previous week. Prices slipped just over a penny and are now around 38 cents higher than year-ago levels.

Statewide gas prices edged up three-tenths of a cent for the week to an average of $2.541 per gallon. They are nearly 38 cents higher than one year ago.

California still had the highest gas prices in the nation, and San Francisco outpaced L.A. as the priciest city surveyed for the fifth week in a row. San Francisco lost 2 cents to $2.578.

Minnesota was the lowest-priced state, at $2.114 per gallon, and the city with cheapest gas was Cleveland, which fell nearly 7 cents to $2.164 per gallon.
