L.A. Gas Prices Inch Up

Gasoline prices in Los Angeles increased only marginally the past week as conditions indicated a lower price level for the rest of summer, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.

The average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area rose eight-tenths of a cent to $2.579 on Friday from $2.571 one week ago. The minute increase is in contrast to an 8-cent rise one week ago. The price was $2.392 per gallon one month ago and $2.196 one year prior.

“Even though prices on a week-to-week comparison are up, the high water mark was Monday,” said Auto Club spokeswoman Carol Thorp. “Since then, prices have been declining slowly. Demand for gas this summer is lower because of high prices. We can expect slow and steady declines at retail pumps for the next few weeks.”

The Orange County area had the lowest average price in Southern California for the fourth week in a row, rising eight-tenths of a cent to $2.558. The Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Lompoc area had the highest gas price, going up 1.1 cents to $2.679.

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline as of 12:01 a.m. each Friday.
