Apple Profit Surges on iPod Sales

Apple Computer Inc. on Wednesday said its quarterly profit more than quintupled, fueled by strong sales of its iPod digital music players and its signature Macintosh computers.


Apple shipped more than 6 million iPods, about 1 million more than analysts expected, and saw strong sales of its upgraded operating system. It was the ninth consecutive sequential increase for iPod shipments, which accounted for 31 percent of Apple’s total quarterly revenue.


Apple reported net income of $320 million (37 cents per diluted share) for the third quarter ended June 25, compared with $61 million (8 cents) for the like period a year earlier. Revenue rose 75 percent to $3.5 billion from $2 billion.
