Actors, Producers to Resume Negotiations

Actors and producers, who had suspended contract negotiations on Jan. 9, have agreed to resume the talks Wednesday, Jan. 19.

Unions representing both sides appear eager to move things along amicably, as evidenced by the quick return to the table, according to a source close to the talks.

The Screen Actors Guild, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have declined any comment on the talks, citing a press blackout.

SAG’s 120,000 members and AFTRA’s 80,000 members have been operating under a one-year extension to a three-year deal that expired June 30, 2004.

They have been negotiating a new three-year deal that broke down in part over the issue of “promotional launches,” in which producers proposed airing the first few episodes of new shows without paying actors residuals.

The hold-back was something the producers secured in contracts with the writers’ and directors’ unions last year.
