LAX Plan Subject of El Segundo Suit, L.A. Times Reports

A lawsuit filed by the city of El Segundo alleges Los Angeles’ plan to expand the airport is based on flawed environmental data, the L.A. Times reported Tuesday.

The suit states that environmental reports for the modernization of Los Angeles International Airport failed to fully address the impacts of air pollution, noise, and other factors on surrounding communities.

In the 12-page petition, filed in L.A. Superior Court on Monday, El Segundo’s attorneys argued that Los Angeles officials violated state environmental law in a rush to push the plans for the multi-billion expansion through the approval process.

“The great quantities of time and money expended by the parties in the LAX Master Plan environmental review process have not resulted in a high-quality, or even an adequate, EIR,” according to the petition by the San Francisco law firm Shute Mihaly & Weinberger. “In fact, the environmental documentation leaves many of the public’s concerns unaddressed and questions unanswered.”

The Times reported that the suit was the first of several expected to be filed this week over the LAX expansion plans.
