Broadcom Corp., the Irvine-based chipmaker, has struck a 10-year, $183 million lease to move its headquarters to the city’s University Research Park, taking 685,000 square feet in eight new buildings.

Broadcom plans to move from its Irvine Spectrum base in two years. Irvine Co., which owns University Research Park, will develop the buildings.

In all, Broadcom is set to expand its operations by more than 200,000 square feet in one of the largest office leases ever for Orange County.

The move brings Broadcom, which makes chips for television set-top boxes and personal computers, closer to the University of California, Irvine, a partner in the research park. UCI’s engineering school is named for Broadcom co-founder and Chairman Henry Samueli.

“This move affords us an excellent opportunity to consolidate our growing business while moving closer to John Wayne Airport and UCI, one of the best research universities in the nation,” Samueli said. “We’ve developed a great working relationship with UCI and look forward to many years of successful collaboration.”

Other companies at University Research Park include Time Warner Inc.’s America Online, Intel Corp., Cisco Systems Inc. and Skyworks Solutions Inc.
