Pace of Factory Growth Climbs

Manufacturing activity at U.S. factories picked up in December, expanding for the 19th consecutive month, boosted by an increase in new orders and despite a decline in employment, a report showed on Monday.

The Institute for Supply Management said its main index measuring industrial activity rose to 58.6 in December from 57.8 in November, slightly more robust than analysts had anticipated.

A reading of 50 or above means the manufacturing sector is expanding. The index has been 50 or above since May of 2003, according to revised figures.
