Gas Prices Continue Inching Downward

Gas prices kept up their slow descent in the week ended Dec. 27, continuing a slide that started in mid-October.

The average gallon of self-serve regular in the Los Angeles area was $2.025 for the week, according to the Energy Information Administration, down from $2.072 the previous week. The statewide average was $2.010, down from $2.049 the week earlier. Prices remained higher, however, on a year-over-year basis. Prices for the week were nearly 42 cents higher than the year earlier statewide. Year-ago prices in L.A. were 43 cents lower than current numbers.

Mid-grade and premium gas followed a similar pattern, peaking in mid-October and falling slowly ever since.

California was the most expensive state to buy a gallon of gas in, and L.A. edged out San Francisco as the most expensive city to fill up your tank for the week ended Dec. 27.
