LAX Holiday Traffic Expected to Rise

Airport officials expect nearly 2.9 million travelers to pass through Los Angeles International Airport during this year’s busy 17-day holiday travel period, slightly exceeding last year’s total of 2.8 million.

The estimated increase in passengers from Dec. 17 to Jan. 2 will be driven by an increase in international travel, Los Angeles World Airports said in a statement Wednesday. Domestic travel is expected to be flat compared with last year.

The busiest travel days are anticipated to be Friday and Saturday, Dec. 23 and 24, and the long weekend ending Jan. 2, with flights on those days operating at capacity.

Airport officials are forecasting smooth operations during the peak travel days, as was the case during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period, LAWA said.

Passengers departing LAX during this period are advised to be in airline ticketing lobbies two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights.

Officials said that improvements have been made at LAX to cut down on the number of delays and lighten the congestion:

  • Eight more passenger screening lanes have been added, bringing the total number at LAX to 60, the most of any U.S. airport.
  • Travelers from the San Fernando Valley can take advantage of the new Van Nuys FlyAway shuttle service, which offers parking and roundtrip bus service 24 hours a day from the valley to LAX for $6.
  • Motorists picking up passengers can park in the LAX Cell Phone Lot without charge and wait to be called on their mobile phones before driving to the arrival level.

Travelers are also reminded to leave gifts and large boxes unwrapped for inspection, LAWA said.
